Should Steve Irwin get a State Funeral?

September 4, 2006

Here’s an interesting question: should Steve Irwin get a State Funeral. Despite some of his more annoying characteristics, there’s little doubt that as a man Irwin did far, far more than many others in the past in promoting Australia abroad, and after all, we’ve given them to people far less worthy than of one than Steve Irwin. Personally I’d reckon yes.

Update: Steve Irwins family was offered a state funeral, looks like they might turn it down according to this story at news.com.au

  1. i dont think he should get a state funeral. he didnt actually do much for australia as a whole. he was simply a famous and rich entertainer and entepreneur. even the man who founded the democrat party didn’t get a state funeral, why is steve any better? he was a bit of a jerk anyway

  2. Duncan, before reading your post, I was curious about what your take on Steve Irwin’s death would be. Now I know.

I ocassionally watched his show, and even asked myself how does someone get the balls to play with crocodiles the way he did. Was he the real Crocodile Dundee?

  3. I cried for two hours when I found out Steve Irwin is dead and I never knew him personally. He had two little kids that will be devestated to lose him and a wife who only had about 15 years with him. He should get a publicized funeral like Princess Diana. To me he was a great scientist. His methods of discovery and observation were unique. The world will be sadder without him.

  4. Steve was a teacher and a scientist. His methods of discovery and observation were unique. The world will be sadder without him. Jacque Cousteau is rich too and what does that prove? His life was valuable. People who mock others that are great especially at a time like this need to grow up and learn some social skills.

  5. when i found out about stevos death i cried im still crying. i think his family should do what steve would want. peolple who critisize steve shoul think if you were in his shoes would you want people talking about you that way (even if you has passed on?) even though i didnt know him i felt like he was my best friend. im still hoping to wake up from this nightmare. i will be praying for his fsmily + friends
    God Bless,

  8. i too was devasted to hear of steves death. myself and my childeren have watched him on tv and his movie. my oldest son was upset to hear of his death as well. my prayers and thoughts go out to his wife and childeren i feel bad for them. and may you rest in peace steve god bless!

  9. Steve Irwin was a great man.He has done so much for world conservation. My son started watching him when he was little he is almost 12 now, and was upset by his death.. Steve Irwin is a great role model for youngsters these days when heroes are hard to come by.. I know as far as im concerned a state funeral would be great that way people all over the world could pay tribute to this great man… I am praying for htis family.. may God be with you …..

  10. Aside from Jack (who seems a bit of an idiot to me and most others I’d imagine), people understand how much Steve contributed to wildlife conservation and education, and if Austrailia is the natural environment they say they are (we know they are) then Steve Irwin most certainly DID do alot for Austrailia as a whole. I never wanted to come there until he showed what the country had to offer in nature and I’m by no means alone. Hey Jack – I hope people have as pleasant comments about you as you had when you pass – oh, yeah – no one will notice.

  11. Steve deserves whatever kind of funeral Terri deems appropriate, but he does deserve a state send-off. I want to thank him for the knowledge and caring he’s instilled in me and millions of others for wildlife, and my heart breaks for his family – my 8 yr old daughter would be devastated at losing her daddy – I can’t imagine what poor little Bindi is going through. Terri, you and your kids are in my prayers, and remember that we never really lose those we love, they live on in our hearts, our minds and our souls. Steves soul will always be in the Australia Zoo and in Bindi and Bob’s hearts.

Steve, is part of those human beings who are born with special gifts and that make them be different, of some way, to the rest. Its passage by the life was short, but sufficient to leave a love legacy us. Love by the animals, the people, the nature, the life. Beyond its eccentricities, Steve obtained the attention of million people around the world. Through its programs of TV, I could follow its adventures, break myths. Today from Venezuela, country where alive, I can say to them that Steve Irwin projected more to its country than any other person. What if it deserves funeral of state? Without a doubt, that is deserved more and. Peace to your rest, friend. Thanks to have existed!!!..

  13. Man, I wanted to cry when I find out the news!! I still feel sad just thinking about his two little ones and his wife, I use to watch his show all the time and I have learn a lot from him, spetially to Love other people and Animals. Que dios lo tengo en su gloria we will always remember him. (Jack what have you done for the wildlife, or even for your own life dude, I bed you anything that you are not a happy person)

    LM

  14. Rest In Peace.

You have done your work on earth.

There’s heaven that needs you .

    RIP

  15. My heart is breaking that steve has died. My friend broke the news to me when I was at work and I was in shock I didn’t believe her at first. I had to run out of work because I was about to break down from crying over the news. I am still saddend about the news. My heart goes out to his family and friends. I watched steve for 10 years. I can’t believe he’s gone! I’ll miss him so much. I hope to see him in heaven and I know he’s with his mom now. RIP stevo! We will always remember you! I absolutely think he should get a state funeral!!!!

  16. He deserves a state funeral!!! He was a wonderful person and a man with a strong and loving spirit.

  17. please make him go in a state funeral he deserves it

  18. everyone is srry for steve irwin.steve irwin died loving what he did.i think that steve irwin deserves to get a state funeral

  19. He deserves a state funeral and much more… he dedicated his life for wildlife preservation around the world, he rised Australia?É‚Äö?Ǭ¥s reputation with his enthusiasm and charm, he will be always remembered and loved by every aussie and nature fan in the world… a message for jack the first person in this post.. more respet for some of the most dedicated persons you can meet, think of what you talk about

  20. Steve brought so much knowledge into the average household in the importance of wild animals and the need to preserve wild life throughout the world. He will be greatly missed by the world. he is so deserving of a state funeral. Terri, Bindi and Bob my prayers are with you, you have such a loving family and I am deeply saddened by your loss. RIP Steve

  21. Hi Duncan,

Nice comments here, i hope people will return the favour when you die XD.

Anyways i wish you were the one in his position, knowing that if he was still alive he wouldn’t be wasting time defaming another person. So cheers! May you get your deserts soon! 🙂

    -Xyber.

  22. I think that Steve DESERVES a state funeral. But I don’t think he’d want one. Either way, he’ll be remembered as one of the finest people to walk this Earth.

God bless his family and friends.

    R.I.P. Steve.

    Crikey.

  23. Steve was the MAN.
I bet there are millions of children around the world who would dream of having a father like him. There is so much talk of him as a wildlife preservationist, but I think when it all said and done and he gets his judgement, the fact that he was a great husband and father is what really counts. The passion he had for his family was amazing. Thats the true measure of a man, not just having the ball to wrestle with the crocs.

  24. steve irwin passed away jus cant belive that .i jus saw him on my tv set.i was shaken. i just kept on thinking about this trajic incedent i was really sad.we owes him a state funeral.and u jack you are a stranger to this world atlest he did something good to this world ,ups and downs are there in every ones life u have no rite saying him a”JERK” u r insulting a person who is noe more .You are cheap and pathetic

  25. When I picked up the newspapers and read of Steve’s death, I couldn’t keep the tears back. I had to share the news with my 10 year old daughter Cassia who enjoyed watching Steve’s programs over the last couple of years. She was so heart broken. Our prayers are with Terri and the kids. Our loss is Heaven’s gain!

  26. For those of you that have the nerve (thats you Jack) to say that Irwin didn’t do anything for Australia, you are way off the mark. In fact, you must be the most un-cultured bloke I know. I’m from America and I can assure you that he is the most well known Aussie anyone in America knows. He has unknowingly encouraged millions of Americans to travel here. He deserves more than a state funeral because he was far above politics. Jack, perhaps you should go wrestle a croc. For all you Aussies that don’t bother to look in your backyard, rest assured Irwin was well loved and respected in America. Too bad you all didn’t respect him in his life but only choose to profit in his death.

I’m from Venezuela, in Southamerica and I was shocked when I heard about Steve’s death, I just couldn’t believe that, I rarely cry for someone’s death and above all for someone I had never met personally and wasn’t from my country, but I cried his death. I used to watch his programs by Animal Planet and I really loved them, Steve was a great man, he loved his family, the animals and his country, even when I’m not Australian myself, I began to have interest in Australia after watching his programs, I would to visit Australia someday and his Zoo, too bad that he’s gone too soon and in that terrible way leaving two small children. My prayers are with his family and all his friends. God Bless him forever!!.

  28. It’s interesting that so many Australians didn’t care for Steve Irwin. Beyond his conservation messages, he was a passionate man who loved life and his family. He was always positive, respectful and found beauty in everything surrounding him. I’m surprised that Australians don’t want to be ‘viewed’ this way. If you’d rather be viewed as the negative, hateful people you’ve shown yourself to be on this site and many others, you can forget about this American tourists dollars. Terri, keep on with your work and may Bindi and Bob be as passionate as their father. RIP Steve and Godspeed.

  29. Jack

You’re such an ignoramus. “…the man who founded the democrat party” has a name it’s Don Chipp. But there’s probably not much point telling you that because with your IQ you would have forgotten it in about 15 seconds.

And yes, he did get a State Funeral. Check out obits.com.au – if you can remember how to spell it.

I think Steve Should get a state funeral no doubt about it he was a wonderful man and will be missed by thousands i think aa state funeral would be fair to let everyone say there goodbye’s Dont you have a heart and do something good for once! STATE FUNERAL PLEASE! MISS YOU STEVE IM SO SORRY!

  31. I most certainly think that Steve should be given a state funeral! Steves knowledge & love for all wildlife was almost angel like! He job on earth was to make people see and belive how important wildlife is to the earth! God is with his family you can bet on that! See you in heaven Steve!
    thanks

  32. This is one of those things that we did not finish understanding. Steve Irwing was for all what we could see it by television, an example in all the senses. Good Father, Good Son, Good Person. I do not exaggerate if I say that I learned to want and to respect to the animals by its extraordinary work. But everything has changed suddenly…Steve has passed away.. but at the same time the legend has been born of a good man that leave like legacy the love to the animals?ɬ¢?¢‚Äö¬¨?Ǭ¶
    Buddy ….rests peacefully.

  33. To: Jack(ass)
What you said about Steve certainly reflects the STUPIDITY you have going on in your pathetic little mind! May god have mercey on your SOUL!!!!
I hope you have a most uncomfortable life!
    thanks joshie0z

  34. YES Steve should get a state funeral. Perhaps those in Australia don’t realise how much of an icon he was. Many with children, like myself, hoped to visit Australia and Australia Zoo ONLY because of the work of Steve.

We spent over ?É‚Äö?Ǭ£100 dollars online buying crocodile hunter clothing etc for our son. I am sure we are not the only family to have been motivated to part with money because of his influence.

Sometimes you only realise how great someone was when they are gone!

He was an inspiration to very many and will be sadly missed.

Rest in Peace and God Bless.

  35. Steve was a great teacher of conservation and wildlife. A state funeral is not enough.
Feed his body to the crocodiles!
He would have approved, and it’s really the only fitting send-off for someone with his passion for interacting with nature the way he did.

  36. God Bless Steve and his family during this difficult time.

  37. Steve was an ambassador of Australia to the world and an ambassador of mankind to the animal kingdom. There is no doubt that a man who is recognized worldwide, and who committed his life and spoke his heart out on TV with his charming aussie accent to educate the world about wildlife would deserve a state funeral. At a personal level, Steve has influenced me in many ways and taught me great things mainly about Australian wildlife. I admire his passion and drive to the things he loved. My heart felt prayers go out to Terri and the 2 kids.

Steve was always happy and watching his enthusiasm for his family, animals, and our plant just made us happy for the hour we joined in. He was always gentle, kind and put everyone else first – even giving up a documentary once to save an old man’s life in the Bahamas. How many people can say they are as selfless or as caring about others? He will be sorely missed on many levels – by Terri and his children and by all of his millions of fans of which I was honored to be one. It was great to see a gregarious and charming man who was not a potty mouth enjoying nature and life full throttle and showing respect in the process. I am not surprised so many people loved him as close friends and enduring fans. There was no one like him…only poor imitations.

  39. Steve will be greatly missed, condolences to the family and friends. This is very tragic and he was taken way too soon. He will always be remembered. I’m sure he would have joked “Crikey…your a naughty stingray” had he lived. It’s hard to watch his friends/family talk of him, very sad, very tragic the kids did not have much time with him.
STEVE RULES!! WE LOVE YOU STEVE!

  40. My comment is to Ben Banks. I wasnt going to comment considering most poeple seem to just be arguing needlessly. But your comment disgust me how dare you… I dont know you nor what you do but I hope your wife, children, family or friends dont ever have to hear someone wish your corpse to be eaten. Like I said I dont know you, neither did I know Steve Irwin on a personal level. But Ill tell you this Ben Banks. He was more of a man then you could ever be you and the other jack asses who are degrating a man who has passed on and isnt here to defend himself. And Ill put money on this if the situation was reversed Steve would be consoling your wives and children not making slandering comments towards you!!! As for the untimely passing of Steve Irwin, I believe everthing happens for a reason, he will forever remain in the hearts of those who loved him.If we dont forget what he tried to teach us all and we teach our children to conserve and care for our wildlife then his death is not invain! To Terri, Bindi, and Baby Bob,my familys heart goes out to you and yours, youll be in our thoughts and prayers…as for Bob Irwin God Bless you in your loss of a wonderful son and great spokesperson for this little place WE ALL call earth!!!

  41. I must agree with Mr. JRWinters. Why would somebody feed a person who they love to a croc! Just to watch the body to be torn limb by limb in some dark muddy water? Ben you are an idiot to say such a horrid and graphic thing! That would be just to horrible to watch! That goes right along with the stupidity of JACK at the top of these comments! Why don;t you sacrifice you self to croc since think its such a good Idea to be eaten up by one!

  42. To JR Winters and Joshieoz,

You two are certainly quick to take offense and begin the name calling without acknowledging (or maybe even understanding) tne nature of my post.
I admired Steve Irwin, and enjoyed his work. His whole professional life involved putting himself in harms way and acting as his own crocodile bait. A bigger-than -life personality like that deserves a bigger-than-life send off. And it deserves an appropriatly personal one. I believe that he would approve of my suggestion as being the most consistant with his philosophy of life… everything is part of the chain. And I believe that he would have frowned upon any milk-toast sentimentality that held his possibility of being eaten as degrading. You are basically calling his life’s work degrading if you consider his possibility of being eaten by crocodiles degrading. By your definition, his death by stingray was degrading! Don’t impose your middle-class armchair quarterback values on a man who would never have been satisfied with a mundane lifestyle by condemning his memory to a mundane funeral! Give him an appropriate send-off the way he would have wanted.

  43. I was deeply saddened by Steve’s death and I personally pray that he knew Christ as His Lord and Savior. Whatever type of funeral wouldn’t be enough to honor him, his family, or his work here. My condolences to Terry, Bindi, and Bob – they have lost a lot. If I had to choose his funeral it would be in a private corner of the zoo that he loved and built up teaching others about conservation and respecting what God has given us. Rest in Peace.

  44. Thank you Joshieoz and it is Mrs. lol! That was my point and he just doesnt have the brain function to get it! What did Steveo love more then crocs.. His Family and I dont think he would much appreciate you or anyone one putting his wife or babies through that horror! Now Im done with this silliness. His wife will honor him as he so chose above all may he rest in peace! God Bless You All..

  45. He was an Aussie legend

  46. don’t tell me to slow down partner
