I’m back….

admin —  October 14, 2004

Yes, after a heavy fortnight dedicated to the Australian election I’m back on deck and blogging!
Having not been able to update the Blog Herald in 10 days results in a Google Page Rank slip from 7 to 6 which is a pain, but I’ll make up for it in the coming weeks.

For those that haven’t notice my new election cycle resolution is that I will push Firefox where ever I can. Its a great browser, and the only time I now resort to IE is when updating the Blog Herald as MT 2.6.. will not display properly in it: I can only hope that the team at SixApart have made MT 3 more standards compliant.

Blogging space ship One

admin —  September 30, 2004

fascinating,
http://www.2020hindsight.org/2004/09/29/ansari-x-prize-x1/

you know the problem with the 1960’s futurist’s visions of space travel at the turn of the century is that they wrongly took a socialist view that Government would successfully fund space travel. Skip foward 40 years and no trips to Mars but for the first time in a long time we are moving forward in space travel and it is private enterprise that is funding it. Like all good inventions its the endevour of the human spirit free from Government interference and assisted by private enterprise that achieves the most in the long term.

Delayed moblogging coming soon…

admin —  September 20, 2004

I’ve been a big fan of moblogging for some time and have recently been fortunate to obtain a phone from work with camera, however there is no ability to add a data ability to the service, none the less photos will be here soon, abeit delayed by a data cable I’m yet to purchase. No doubt the pics will be boring to most, but the lack of pics from South Western Australia on the net says to me “fill the niche”, then again maybe I’m a worry :-)

Wi-Fi blogging on the lounge

admin —  September 20, 2004

Although I haven’t had the opportunity to blog as much lately as I’d like, the ability to work from my lounge room, in front on my TV through Wi-Fi and laptop has radically changed the way I work at home. From hours in my office I’ve now been liberated from the desktop to the laziness of the 3 seater lounge! The net effect is hours more of the web, although at this stage not more time blogging due to work constraints….. may be after the election, either way I highly recommend the experience that Wireless Internet provides, now if only Australia would embrace free WiFi internet access like the US has…I look on with envy when I read Dave Winer whinge about visiting the rare town without it, and others who can sit outside a public library and surf the net for free when the nearest WiFi hotspot is 80km south of 180km north from here, and then only if you’re willing to pay the ridiculous amount of AUD$11 per hour!!!!

Hiatus redux

As posted on the Blog Herald

Duncan Riley> My friend Fiindlay Osborn recently posted to his blog, designed by yours truly, excusing his hiatus from posting comment to his blog. The reason being “local happenings”. Fin is a relatively new convert to blogging and a strong convert at that. However the notion of apologising for not posting regularly in a notion that provides a wonderful ideal of loyalty to the blogosphere that is often lacking from many bloggers, and of late, from myself as well, for as Fin has, stated local events have prevented me for the better part of the last three months of providing unique comment to the Blog Herald and my personal blog duncanriley.com. For those outside Australia, those “local” events are the 2004 Australian Federal Election.
I will not discuss my political views here, because despite the occasional and Federal Level. As a consequence my pre-eminent focus has been on the retention of my employer, and as such my own employment, to the behest of the Blog Herald; in deed I even considered selling the site to a would-be suitor who recently made me a fairly competitive offer for the site. Whilst I won?ɬ¢?¢‚Äö¬¨?¢‚Äû¬¢t promise to never sell the site, the offer was not fair compare to the loyalty of the readers of the site to the information and broad blogging news that I, and my loyal submitters, have provided over the last 2 years.

To my loyal readers my apologies for the lack of original comment of late. After October 9, my focus will return to the Blog Herald and duncanriley.com. In the mean time if you’d like to submit new commentary or posts feel free to email me with them. This site is as only good as its readers and it?ɬ¢?¢‚Äö¬¨?¢‚Äû¬¢s the 1400 unique viewers per day, with out you this site is nothing
regards
Duncan

Ultra-fast broadband hits Europe

I can’t wait, although it will probably take Telstra another 50 years…..

Reuters: His 10-megabit-per-second service from telecommunications company Bredbandsbolaget is up to 20 times faster than conventional cable modems, enabling a user to download a two-hour movie in a matter of minutes rather than hours

blogging from the lounge room

admin —  August 24, 2004

After nearly 4 days without ADSL internet access and 12 solid hours of trying to make my new ADSL modem/ router work, I sit this evening not in my home office but on my laptop in my lounge room, flicking between the Olympics and Rove Live blogging this post wirelessly. I’d like to give credit to the folks at Bilken who provided the hardware, but having wasted the better part of a day getting the thing working I am currently planning voodoo dolls not roses. The problem: Win XP would not auto pick up the IP address from the router. “But it should” so said the guys at Harvey Norman (the point of purchase), iiNet, my ISP and the useless Bilken teck support line. 1 replacement later and many a search on Google I discover that it was a simple issue of XP corruption due to spyware removal.
Did I find this on the Bilken website? no: they told me to replace my network card. No reference on the Microsoft pages either. Hours and hours of searching, plenty of people with the same problem, and plenty of solutions that didnt work. Eventually: a WinSock XP repair program (as soon as I find the link I’ll post it) that in 30 seconds fixed the lot! Who ever wrote it I love u :-)

The day the ADSL died

admin —  August 21, 2004

Ahhh!!!! Looks like the D-Link DSL-300 has packed it up: no ethernet connection working: my ISP iinet (despite providing it) said its not their problem and the manufacturer. If the Blog Herald is a little quiet the next few days you’ll know why: 56k connection through the work laptop, a bit like 1998 revisted.
