  • The Nanny for Congress

    nannyOnly in America 🙂

    From City Rag:

Fran Drescher did not mince any words in talking about her interest in a pursuing a career in politics on the Howard Stern show this morning. Straight from Fran’s mouth, she’d like to become a Senator or Congresswoman for the state of New York.

Sad really. I suppose with that annoying voice people would be forced to listen to her, she’d certainly stand out from a crowd.

  • Technorati AP deal win-win for bloggers

Great news for all bloggers, with a deal announced by AP with Technorati that will see links to blogs citing AP stories provided to all newspapers that subscribe to AP.

From an AP story at Macon.com:

Technorati will search blogs for postings that include links to AP stories. Links to those postings will be available along with the original AP stories on 440 member Web sites served by AP Hosted News, a service that uses AP servers to display AP content on member sites. There also will be a box featuring the “Top Five Most Blogged About” AP stories.

I’m not sure whether all 440 member web sites will take up the option, but it’s still going to provide more opportunities for bloggers to gain traffic when reporting on AP stories. Congrats to David and the rest of the team at Technorati.

Update: more details at the Technorati blog here, as well as an example page from the Buffalo News.

  • Free Wireless for Americans

What a brilliant idea, from ISP Planet:

M2Z’s goal is ?ɬ¢?¢‚Äö¬¨?Ǭ¶ provide free high speed connections to 95 percent of U.S. consumers without any recurring fees. This is a grand undertaking.”
    -M2Z FCC request

Kleiner Perkins, history’s most successful venture capital firm, is backing John Muleta and Milo Medin’s offer to unwire the entire United States. 384/128 will be free while they’ll sell higher speeds, ads, voice and much else. In return for 20 megahertz of spectrum, M2Z will pay a 5 percent royalty to the U.S.

It will be interesting to see if the US Government backs the proposal. Could it ever happen in Australia? Not while the Government still owns Telstra, but imagine it, free wireless over 95% of the population of Australia…you could take your laptop anywhere (with a half decent population centre) and get online….ok, I’m dreaming, it will never happen here as long as both Political parties remain the lapdogs of big media.

  • SixApart getting into a bit of strife over breast feeding

Valleywag reports SixAparts Live Journal team is in battle with breat feeding advocates over images on LJ blogs showing breast feeding.

I’m male, so I’m not even going to go near the whole breat feeding in public issue, but I’d share this advice: banning pictures of a totally legal act undertaken by mothers and their children in public, particularly when thise pics are in context, doesn’t bide well for the LJ team, or SixApart for that matter. Surely there would be far worse content elsewhere on LJ or even TypePad for that matter, that would warrant action than pictures of breat feeding, and I’d think from a PR perspective that SA doesn’t really need a fight with the breast feeding nazis that are likely to start attacking the company once this news spreads.

  • Text Link Ads Calculator

Patrick and Andy over at Text Link Ads have announced the launch of the Text Link Ads Calculator, which can be viewed here. Very handy tool if you’ve ever wondered what sort of money you can get from TLA. Certainly I’ve been having a lot of success with them lately, both personally and with b5media, so I’d recommend it, although sign up here after you check out the calculator.

  • bebo raises $15m

    bebo

Social Networking remains very, very hot. Just a day after the E-Commerce Times ran this story about kiddies starting to turn away from MySpace because it’s become a bit to mainstream, and that they are moving to sites such as bebo, Paid Content reports that bebo has just raised $15 million in VC from Benchmark Capital.

What I also found completely amazing was their membership numbers: 24 million registered users and rising. That’s about 35-40% of MySpace, but in a marketplace in which quite recently MySpace was said to have over 80% of the market, I’d think NewsCorp and Rupert would want to watch their backs with this mob.

    boatOnly in Australia🙂

A MAN who ran his boat on to rocks just metres from the Sydney residences of the prime minister and governor-general has been charged with drink driving.
Sydney Water Police said they found a motor cruiser aground on rocks at Kirribilli Point with a man, woman and three children on board about 7pm (AEST) yesterday.

Police had to obtain the permission of the Australian Protective Services to access the boat as it was near Admiralty House and Kirribilli House.

The two properties are the respective Sydney residences of Governor-General Michael Jeffery and Prime Minister John Howard.
