  • Tucows buys dead cow Kiko

Tucows has announced that they were the buyer of the dead Web 2.0 startup Kiko. Interesting buy, mainly because probably like a whole pile of other people, I’ve always thought of Tucows as a Web 1.0 company. Is this a step into the Web 2.0 field for the once mighty software download player? only time will tell I guess.

  • Heading Eastwards

I’m off to the Hunter Valley this weekend for the Media Connect Influence Conference. I’ll be in Sydney briefly on Saturday 9 September then off to the Hunter Valley Sunday through to Tuesday. My thanks to Phil Sim for the invite. I know fellow Western Australian resident Richard Giles is attending, but if anyone else is going drop me an email.

  • When the man becomes the blog

There’s a big blog conference in India this weekend according to ITWire, and the headline speaker: “Robert Scobleizer”. I kid you not. And in case they realise their error, here’s the screenshot:

Good luck to them none the less.

  • Why you shouldn’t use Captchas on your blog

My latest weekly column at The Blogging Times. And yes, I’m quite serious, and no, it’s not PC BS, god, anyone who knows me knows how anti-PC I am (indeed, I think I regularly make my business partners in b5media blush), but just because I’m anti-PC doesn’t mean that I think that people choosing to discriminate against people with vision impairments is fair when it is quite the opposite.

  • A note to Devany Kindle

    Dear Ms Kindle
    [email protected]

Thank you for the numerous unkind words you have sent me in relation to my posts on the death of Steve Irwin. As an American I’m sure you’re a complete expert on how some Australians found Steve Irwin embarrassing at times. As I have previously written, the man was a walking clich?É?í?Ǭ© and often portrayed stereotypes of Australians which were not based in fact.

A reasonable demonstration of stereotypes for example is demonstrated in these kind words you sent to me:

My ancestry left England, yours were removed in chains. I don’t expect that you have a great genetic disposition, but hopefully you aspire to learn.

But of course my dear, I must have imagined that my Grandparents on one side were Scottish, and on the other side they were English free settlers from the 1840s. If one must play this game my dear, your relatives probably left England because they were religious freaks that had sex with goats, but I wouldn’t dare stoop so low as to place such stereotypes on my cousins across the Pacific.

As I’d noted, Steve Irwin did have many positive points, but it would have been remiss of me not to note some of his negatives as well, after all it was the character of the man in being so grossly annoying that he eventually endeared himself into the hearts of many.

  • The Fark take on Steve Irwin’s death

Ok, it’s probably not cool to laugh about the dead, but this is a little funny (from Fark):

  • Should Steve Irwin get a State Funeral?

Here’s an interesting question: should Steve Irwin get a State Funeral. Despite some of his more annoying characteristics, there’s little doubt that as a man Irwin did far, far more than many others in the past in promoting Australia abroad, and after all, we’ve given them to people far less worthy than of one than Steve Irwin. Personally I’d reckon yes.

Update: Steve Irwins family was offered a state funeral, looks like they might turn it down according to this story at news.com.au
