Trackback Mistakes

Quadszilla over at the SEO Black Hat blog has a very interesting tale of how Trackbacks can get you into trouble here….it’s a must read for every blogger…aside from a WordPress plugin though I’m not sure of any other way of avoiding this other than by not using apostrophes in post headings….which I personally usually don’t anyway, but it’s definitely something to keep an eye on.

Aw shit … I’m usually a big user of those.

There must be a plugin available and if not, some smart plugin coders should get onto this.

Why hasn’t anyone called BS on this? WordPress removes quotes and non-alphanumeric characters before creating post slugs.

To appreciate why it was written and how it was written, you really have to read:

    this,
    then this, and finally this

Check the feed, he’s running wordpress.

I pulled off back to back link bait during the weekend before a monday forum launch. This set up tons of new visitors just as I announced.

But you are right about quotes, my bad on that one.

Before you pat yourself on the back too much Quad, you’re lucky I have a good sense of humor, that’s all. 🙂

You’re right Matt – I’ve just had a check at my blog and it does strip them – so what’s the real story here.

Is this a real issue or just some BS link baiting going on here? |-:

It’s a real issue Martin when it comes to apostrophes. The link bait was in the way that he told me the larger consequences of a screwed up URL when it comes to trackbacks. Actually not that big a deal, but it was a good story.

I’ve been aware that I screw up and forget to change the post slug when I use apostrophes for a long time now. And changing grammatical rules to accomodate a software quirk is not my thing. 🙂

Matt, is this something that can be easily fixed in a future WP release?

  7. Martin Avatar

And changing grammatical rules to accomodate a software quirk is not my thing.

Brian, I’m with you on that issue.

But I’m still a little confused. As you can see my url automatically strips the apostrophe from my post heading:

blah blah ?ɬ¢?¢‚Äö¬¨?Ǭ¶ It?ɬ¢?¢‚Äö¬¨?¢‚Äû¬¢s Time to Get Serious!

If you’re using WP, why isn’t yours being stripped as well? Are you doing the post slugs manually?

    What?ɬ¢?¢‚Äö¬¨?¢‚Äû¬¢s Your Story?

I guess from a readers perspective they see the headline written correctly but the url strips it. So it shouldn’t really matter. It shouldn’t realy be a problem because most apostrophes are not from keywords but words like It’sm, What’s, They’re etc.,

    Am I missing something here?

  8. Brian Clark Avatar

I’m not doing them manually — it I were, the url you gave would NOT be going to a 404 page.

Are you using WP 1.5 or 2.x?

I’m using 2.0, so I need to upgrade if it’s been fixed in later versions.

  9. Martin Avatar

    Brian,

I’m using 2.0 and write headlines with all sort of extras ( ” ” ‘ , : – ) and i’ve never had that issue – the slug gets automatically written stripping them giving me a clean url.

I’ve checked my trackback links and the same.

I’m no WP expert so not sure I can help.

Head on over to the WP support forums – they’re usually quick with help there.
