  • OK, so I was wrong about the Sydney Morning Herald

Got into a bit of a debate on another blog the other day (sorry, cant remember where), where I defended the Sydney Morning Herald online against claims it’s become too tabloid and full of crap. Steve Irwin died what..about 2 hours ago as I write this, news.com.au went straight to the story with top headlines + the feature graphic, smh.com.au still has a picture of Cairlin Hill, billed as Australia’s new YouTube Star in it’s featured spot. Compare and contrast (as at 1:45pm AWST):

  • Vale Steve Irwin: Crocodile Hunter 1962-2006

steve irwinAustralia’s own clich?É?í?Ǭ©d gift to the world, Steve Irwin, is dead, killed in an accident doing what he loved best, interacting with deadly wildlife, in this case, a Sting Ray that seems to have taken offence to his presence. Indeed, it’s not hard to image Irwin saying “crikey” as his last word as the stingray barb went through his chest.

Like many Australians I found Steve Irwin annoying. He portrayed a view of Australians to the world that gave Americans in particular the impression that Australians wrestle with crocodiles and say “crikey” at regular intervals. Of course, whilst this caricature was not a true representation of a typical Australian, Steve Irwin was a character in his own right, he was passionate about many things, preservation of our wildlife, and of course, Biosecurity on the Customs ads that pollute our television sets. To his credit he managed to build a world wide fan base where many have failed before him. For many in the world, he put Australia on the map.

Perhaps most sadly of all, he leaves a wife and young children behind. Of course, through many appearances (notably on a Wiggles Video) his daughter is well known to many Australians as well, and today she has lost her father.

I’m sure I’ll be joining many Australian’s today in sending my heartfelt condolences to his family. For all his annoying attributes, Steve Irwn was a trooper, a man who stood by his convictions and truly built a name for himself. He may not have been perfect, but he will be remembered as a man others can only aspire to be, for in his celebrity he continued to remain a true Australian, one who remained humble despite the trappings of fame, and remained loyal to our nation.

  • This has got to be a spoof, right?

    newnewinternet

The New New Internet Conference. Christopher Locke notes that his favourite line is “Gain a Deep, Non-Technical Understanding of Web 2.0”, personally I like “How to Apply Web 2.0 Techniques to Improve Life and Business”…yeh, like we really all want to adopt Web 2.0 in life and business, after all it would involve taking a pile of money and pissing it up against the wall, hoping that your urine turns to gold without actually having a plan as to how to actually turn the urine into gold, and without assessing whether the gold was actually needed in the marketplace anyway (a solution without a problem) 🙂

  • My Fathers Day gift

    absolute power

Today is fathers day in Australia, and my thoughtful 4 year old gave me a gift I’m sure to get many hours of enjoyment out of, Absolute Power Series 1. Although it was made in 2003, the ABC has only recently showed the series here and I only managed to catch a few episodes, but what I saw was bloody brilliant stuff, and I’m looking forward to sitting down and watching the entire first series.

(if you’re in Australia you can get it from the ABC Shop here, it doesn’t seem to be available in the US, but you can get it from Amazon UK.)

  • Something that actually needs Web 2.0

    seal

Darren at Problogger points to The Seal Generator, a site that lets you make your own official seal. Sort of nifty idea, but it desperately needs a Web 2.0 makeover because theres no Ajax that updates the image as you make it, something you sort of come to expect in the days of Ajax enabled Web 2.0 tools and sites, and as you can see in the Web 2.0 business model seal I generated, getting the colours right involves a fair bit of leg work 🙂

  • Kimberly Williams: some sheila’s never give up

More funny stuff in relation to Kimberly Williams of the Boston School of Electrolysis over at Greywolf today here. This sheila never seems to give up, from SEOMoz to Greywolf and who knows where else next, she’s like the energizer bunny on crack, with ridiculous legal threats against half the SEO community. Obviously someone never learned the fable about how digging deeper into a hole doesn’t get you out of it 🙂

  • If Browzer is bad, isn’t Yahoo! as well?

Looks like the Browzar browser might be a bit dodgy, with Techcrunch and the Web 3.0 log reporting that it’s actually IE in disguise + it’s what they claim as “adware”, because the browser utitlises Overture for search results and it’s near on impossible to change away from Overture. And yet Overture is 100% owned by Yahoo!, isn’t it?

OK, so it’s arguably poor practice to force someone to use a particular web search site, but we’re not talking about some shady net outfit here, we’re talking about Yahoo!, so is Techcrunch and Web 3.0 log saying Yahoo! is bad by participating via providing it’s services on Browzar?

  • The Street gets it totally wrong on blog reach

Weird article at The Street on AOL/ Weblogs Inc’s new blog strategy. Most of it is obviously factual, but all I can say is WTF!? to this quote (emphasis added by me):

AOL’s blog expansion comes as advertisers are becoming increasingly interested in reaching people who read and write the online journals because it lets them target their messages to audiences which are passionately interested in particular subjects. The blog audience of about 32 million remains a fairly small percentage of the overall Web users, which means that advertisers tend to buy ads on blog networks like AOL’s so they can reach the most people.

Since when is the sum total of all blog readers 32 million people? there is something like 1 billion people on the internet. Hundreds of millions of people read blogs, although they may not actually know they are reading them according to past surveys *the question of knowing what a blog is, even when they are reading blogs). So where in the world did 32 million come from? Is it a United States only figure, and if it is, since when was the US the be all and end all of the internet? Or is it merely a case of another lazy journalist?
