  • The Seth Godin bubble is about to burst

Every one raves about Seth Godin. Personally, I’ve always thought the hype was way out of control, and as much as a lot of what he says makes sense, I’ve always thought most of it was common sense as opposed to anything ground breaking, and perhaps very well articulated, but nothing really more than this.

Seth of course, seems to lap the hype up. Instead of down playing the hype he’s allowed it to bubble, and like any bubble it’s eventually bound to burst. Techchrunch predicts that Squidoo is going to burst the Seth Godin bubble…well at least give it a rather large leak.

Of course the mettle of the man will be surely tested once Squidoo fails (as it seems it’s going to….I mean $30 is your top payment after 6 months? If we were running b5 like that no one would be working for us any more). Lets see how Seth Godin handles failure. If he pulls through and handles it with style and panache, then I might consider joining the fan club.

  • The open ad marketplace?

Jeff Jarvis calls for Open Source advertising and metric solutions to help bring Advertisers and Bloggers together. A rather socialist suggestion from a right wing blogger I’d think. But I can’t help that think that maybe Jeff Jarvis doesn’t know enough about the advertising industry, because there is no way in hell that you are going to get ad execs to agree on open standards, particularly just for blogs. Some firms might, and good on them, but the industry as a whole? Very, very wishful thinking.

  • Lawsuit Brings Down Agency

The irony. An ad agency tries to sue a blogger who criticised on of it’s campaigns. 1 month later the ad agency folds.

    From Media Post:

WARNER KREMER PAINO ADVERTISING, THE ad agency that last month filed a puzzling lawsuit against a blogger for having criticized the agency’s online ad efforts, has folded. After widespread media coverage, Warner Kremer Paino Advertising, or WKPA, withdrew its suit–though too late to escape near-universal derision.

Blogosphere 1, Stupid Moronic Advertising Executives 0.

  • Webby Awards don’t really reflect the web anymore

The winners of the 2006 Webby Awards have been announced, and it appears as though the blogosphere doesn’t exist….but of course it does, but bloggers aren’t really up for the $500 USD entry fee, and hence we get the usual corporate sites winning awards, and Arianna Huffington’s Huffington Post (not really representative of the blogosphere is it?…any one up for making up a George Clooney post? 🙂 ) despite the fact that web eyeballs are looking elsewhere.

Wired and Investor.com take a similar line, which is heartening in knowing I’m not the only one who seems to think this.

  • Crikey! Blogs are dying!

Trevor Cook refers to the latest subscriber email from Australian Sh*t sheet Crikey that concludes that blogs and blogging are dying:

What most realise is that blogging is the illusion of connection, publishing into a void and thus doubly isolating. Those blogs that survive will and are evolv(ing) into multi-person sites, some with collective and decentred ways of uploading, others with hierarchies essentially identical to paper editing.

Bizarre. Crikey criticises politicians for being out of touch. Me thinks that Stephen Mayne may be totally out of touch, or maybe it’s just in his interest to down play a threat to the business?

  • Blog Plagiarism makes the MSM

Interesting story at Boston.com on Blog Plagiarism. Honestly I didn’t know it was a big problem, after all the real problem is just plain and simple content theft. Apparently though, some of these low lifes are getting crafty and changing names in posts. Personally I don’t see why they’d bother.

  • A F*cking Australian MySpace

So where the bloody hell would you start the first country based version of MySpace, well according to Lee’s Blog:

    myspaceau

    MySpace Australia.

    According to News Corp:

The Australian divisions of multinational companies such as Procter & Gamble, Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Johnson & Johnson and Toyota are expected to be approached as they have advertised on the US site, along with key local brands such as Telstra.

I’m soooooo excited. I could have a heart attack like Big Kev!!!

  • Making money from your blog: TLA

I’ve held back on blogging topics here at duncanriley.com, because at the end of the day I don’t want to compete with my former site, The Blog Herald, or b5media’s Problogger, but I thought I might share a little money making advertiser I’m having great success with, both with my personal sites, and with b5media as well, at that’s Text Link Ads

Some of you would know I had great dealing with Adzaar back in the days. I’m not sure what went wrong with Adzaar, rumor had it that they are skint, but anyhow when I lost a lot of my contracts with these guys I gave Text Link Ads a try, and I’ve got to say I’m happy.

They don’t work on every site. But they do work well on high traffic sites and on decent PR sites. Nice ads, compatible with Adsense, give them a shot by clicking here

  • Bobby is as rough as guts

As part of the impending Australia TV tour, while I’m in Sydney I feel obliged to go an jump around Martin Place with a large sign for Sunrise, as many American would do for the NBC Today Show.

But talking of Mel and Kochie, I also looked into attended Where are they Now, only because I’ve got an empty intinery so far, but the recording is the same time as The Chaser. Don’t know if anyone caught it last Sunday, but I saw a little bit of it during an ad break for Big Brother. They re-united the original Home and Away cast. Now Home and Away started in 88, the Bicentential Year, the year I started High School and Year 7. Nicole Dickson was on the show. Her character was “Bobby”. What can I say. With some people age is kind. With Nicole….jeeeeeeeeeeeeeezus. Rough as Guts. Perhaps it’s best I’m not there 🙂

  • The Australian TV tour

Yep, I’m finally got my holiday booked. I couldn’t get a passport in time (then get the Visa’s and what not) so it’s totally domestic travel for me.

As much as I plan to spend some time laying on a beach, I’ve decided to go a bit quirky as well. It’s been a while since I’ve travelled (building houses and working for yourself sort of limits the budget) so I’m doing the highlight’s of Australian TV Tour.

Starting next Sunday I’m in Row 4 at the Big Brother Eviction Special at Dreamworld on the Gold Coast. I’ve also got tickets to the Cocktail Party before hand, so expect some pictures of me with D grade celebrities as well (Tilly and Elise anyone?? 🙂 ).

I’ll be spending a few days on the Gold Coast, before I jet down to Sydney later in the week (my old home town) where I’ve applied (but not yet confirmed) tickets to The Chasers War on Everything on Thursday. Then back to WA Saturday.

If any bloggers out there want to catch up for a bite to eat, or say gday in Sydney in particular, drop me a line. I’m only there 4 days, but it would be nice to meet some bloggers while I’m there.

Extra: I should have added, I really wanted to be in the audience for The Glass House but they are in Melbourne that week, and it’s too cold to go to Melbourne this time of year 🙂
