Posts from 2004 to 2017. This was a personal blog during a fairly chaotic decade in independent publishing — some of it tech commentary, some of it Australia, some of it ephemera. It’s kept here in full for anyone who arrives via an old link.

Current writing lives at SiliconANGLE.

Rocketboom implodes like a North Korean Missle Test

Vale Rocketboom 2006. It was nice while it lasted, I guess it will probably mean more traffic for zefrank…which isn’t a bad thing I guess. Coverage here, here, here and here.

Joel Comm and Eric Holmlund define irony.

In case people hadn’t noticed I was forced to take down a couple of posts in relation to Joel Comm and Eric Holmlund’s Adsense spam program…basically our hosts are weak and gutless…but I’ll leave that till another day. But talking of ripoffs, it looks like Joel Comm and Eric Holmlund are in deep, deep trouble, […]

    Gmail Grizzle

Anyone else having regular issues with the SMTP for gmail? Seems now serveral times a day I can’t send emails from Thunderbird using my gmail account. Very, very annoying, particularly when I’ve still got pop3 access and am receiving emails with no problems, I just can’t always respond to them.   Tags: gmail

    Big Brother vs Government: 1-0…haha!

Our idiotic government has lost it’s jihad against Network 10’s Big Brother, with ACMA finding that the broadcaster didnt break any laws. Naturally, being the self important imbeciles that they are, with all the other problems our nation faces, the Government is now going to try and change the laws! From News.com.au: THE communications watchdog […]

    America and the Allies

Aaron says it all here…and quotes me a lot…but again I’ll say lest we forget, because we are so fortune that so many gave so much for our freedom. We should never take our freedom for granted, and it’s our responsibility that future generations, those that didn’t have the privilege as I did to meet […]

Happy Independence Day, and stuff you might not know about the United States

Happy Independence Day to all of b5media’s, and my readers. Given that b5media is incorporated in the United States (for the time being…until we might creep a little more north) I thought I’d extend my well wishes. Of course, as with any event of significance, I made the mistake of going to Wikipedia, a mistake […]

    EMAIL ALERT

I’ve decided I need one of those Homeland security style alert boxes for my inbox….I’m so far behind on email at the moment Im responding to stuff from weeks ago, and still got a pile of stuff I should have read back then and missed…so the code alert would be red: high risk of inbox […]

    Big Brother Turkey Slap Transcript

In case the video of the Big Brother Turkey Slap indecent is yanked from YouTube (currently available here), here’s a full transcript of the incident (as I viewed it anyway). Length: 1:57 Start: general discussion 0:08: Video on Camilla in bed, John and Ash call from across the room “Cam come here”. Camilla responds “what”. […]

Senator defends Big Brother…I might even consider voting for him one day..

Thank god there is at least one Australian politician out there with some common sense, and as much as I’ve never been a huge fan of the Australian Democrats, good on Andrew Bartlett for this (via the Behind Big Brother Forums quoting AAP) REALITY TV show Big Brother should be left alone by meddling politicians, […]

Big Brother Turkey Slap: the video

Want to see what the controversy is about: here it is! (note, whilst there is no clear nudity some may deem this NSFW). Tags: Big Brother, Big Brother Australia, Turkey Slap, John and Ash Update: looks like Channel Ten got the video yanked from YouTube, new copy above.

    Big Brother meltdown

If you haven’t caught the news yet, Big Brother Australia is under a huge amount of fire at the moment following an incident of sexual harassment, or sexual assault depending on which report you read, where Big Brother contestant John pinned Camilla down on her bed whilst contestant Ashley whacked her on the face with […]

    PubSub is dead

It’s taken longer than I thought it would, but finally the consolidation of the blog searching market has begun, with Dave Winer reporting that PubSub is dead. Servers Bob Wyman right for being too-snarky towards those who dared criticise this mob in the past…if you want to get support in the community, embrace your critics […]

    Eric Holmlund responds

There’s been some interesting debate and discussion in the comments here at duncanriley.com in relation to my trips inside the Joel Comm Made for Adsense program. I’m always suspicious when people go on the attack and don’t actually try to defend their products, which has been the case now for several days..however Eric Holmlund has […]

Sharing the link love, or how nofollow has failed

I’ve been reading with interest over the last couple of months bloggers, particularly in the SEO community, arguing that the link=nofollow attribute, the attribute launched with much fan fare a few years back as a solution to comment spam has been a complete waste of time. The main argument is that comment spam hasn’t decreased […]

    Profile Peddling the new SEO

Darren has an interesting article over at Problogger today on “Profile Peddling” which is setting up sites on services such as MySpace to drive traffic to your site. Now I’ve got accounts on most of these services, but to be honest I’d never really seen them as a way to drive traffic to sites (I […]

Bloglogic relaunches as a blog news site

I noticed an incoming link from Paul Short’s old blog network Bloglogic tonight, so I thought I’d check it out given I’d recently read the news that he’d given up Bloglogic to trade under the name of Gomaud Media…and I’ve got to say I was shocked! Bloglogic lives! as a blog news style site (I’m […]

US Nuclear security is a circus: even clowns can break in!

Now I think some of the things the US Government are doing at the moment to their citizens, in terms of spying in particular, are abhorrent, but it seems pretty clear that whilst they are busy spying on innocent civilians they are leaving their nuclear warheads unguarded…why you may well ask? Well The Register reports […]

CSS Reboot for Sale at SitePoint, SitePoint redesign

CSS Reboot, an excellent resource of CSS beautifulness is up for sale at Sitepoint.
