Posts from 2004 to 2017. This was a personal blog during a fairly chaotic decade in independent publishing — some of it tech commentary, some of it Australia, some of it ephemera. It’s kept here in full for anyone who arrives via an old link.

Current writing lives at SiliconANGLE.

Techcrunch thinks Bloglines is in trouble because Newgator has a toolbar…hmmm.

Bizarre post from Marshall Kirkpatrick over at Techcrunch suggesting that Bloglines needs to look out because…wait for it…Newsgator has launched a toolbar. To quote: While Bloglines has long been the favorite feed reader for people looking for a simple but powerful tool, the new Newsgator toolbar means that users seeking many of these features now […]

Bomber vs Ironbar: a classic moment in Australian politics

Only in Australia, via the SMH: A federal Liberal backbencher has called Kim Beazley a “fat so and so” after the Labor leader labelled him “weak” for supporting the Government’s controversial immigration laws. Mr Beazley and West Australian Liberal Wilson Tuckey traded verbal insults, their faces within centimetres of each other, as they arrived at […]

No nappies on your goat, then you get the chop…

This is incredible…Andrew Sullivan reports on some Shiite Islamists in Iraq killing shepherds because they have not put modesty diapers (nappies) on their goats! The goats are apparently too tempting for Muslim men…..that is one seriously f*cked up country.

9rules is like MySpace….someones got a big head

rofl! Now 9rules has a lot more revenue options than it did when we first launched simply because of the new avenues we have opened up and that is something that I don?ɬ¢?¢‚Äö¬¨?¢‚Äû¬¢t think could?ɬ¢?¢‚Äö¬¨?¢‚Äû¬¢ve been done if we solely focused on advertising and monetizing things. Same can be said with Myspace. Instead of worrying […]

    Interesting Census questions

It’s census time again…has it really been 5 years, and god bless the ABS, I can do it online using Firefox. Some interesting questions: I thought about adding Mongolian…but you know. Interesting short list though. Spanish doesn’t get a look in here. OK, I didn’t actually submit this exact response….. 🙂 I need help getting […]

I’m in a natural disaster zone!

Exciting…sort of, but not for the people who were worst affected, bloody strong winds though….there’s a bizarre buckle in my brushwood fence, and sand everywhere…but nothing else is damaged. The Tornado struck just over the river from where I am….too close for comfort.   Tags: Australind Tornado

Dave Sifry gets it right…however the reporting has much to be desired

Congrats again to Dave Sifry from Technorati on another excellent state of the blogosphere report, however, as usual, most reporting on it get the reporting WRONG again, even b5media’s own Darren Rowse: these are numbers they are TRACKING PPL! not the sum total of the entire blogosphere! There aren’t 50 million blogs out there, there […]

How the internet is taking over

Interesting study from McKinsey & Co at the Advertising Age, my favourite quote: “Should everybody shift 30% of their dollars to the web?” asked Amy Guggenheim Shenkan, senior practice knowledge specialist in McKinsey’s San Francisco office. “No. There wouldn’t be room today if everybody wanted to shift online. Last year [online media] was $12.5 billion, […]

AOL Data already available on Bittorrent

AOL says that only around 2000 people accessed their “user data” before the site was shut down….but the very same data is now available on bittorrent right now with Mininova showing 3,971 downloads! Update: noticed at Threadwatch that the data has already been mirrored online as well here.   Tags: AOL, AOL Data

Will WordCamp result in a new blogging elite

I’ve been following a fair bit of WordCamp coverage online today, and I can’t help but think: is this the start of the new blogging elite? and I mean that in a positive way, not a negative, after all, there’s no Dave Winer, Robert Scoble or the other usual suspects at this conference. Sure, you’ve […]

Another reason not to use Feedburner: 100 million Chinese Internet users can no longer see your feed

Steve Rubel reports that China has blocked ALL Feedburner feeds into China….that’s a heck of a lot of people who all of a sudden can’t read your feed if you’re using Feedburner.   Tags: Feedburner, China

The Second Life Updater is the bane of my life

This has become the bane of my life. Every 3-4 days…same thing, about 20mb+, I’m on 2mb Cable but I’ve still got to wait, I’ve noticed some days it’s a matter of 5 minutes, over days its 50 minutes, either way, does Linden Labs really need to update SL so often???!!!!   Tags: Second […]

    Robert Scoble is a hypocrite

I’ve been recently updating my Bloglines subs, purging some feeds, adding some new ones, and I decided today to resubscribe to Robert Scoble’s blog…I’d refused to in the past when he moved across to WordPress because as far as I was concerned he was damn lazy in not doing a modrewrite of his old feed…not […]

    Rabbincal Council: no innocents

Something very, very wrong with this, but I’ll leave it at that, don’t want to be accused of being anti-semetic… From ynetnews.com: The Yesha Rabbinical Council announced in response to an IDF attack in Kfar Qanna that “according to Jewish law, during a time of battle and war, there is no such term as ‘innocents’ […]
