I feel your frustration. I made the switch to Jaiku. To me, the appeal of twitter was that it was so simple, and even if it didn’t have that much value to me, I still took the three seconds to use it. But once I wasn’t able to use it, it just became a source of frustration. When your most compelling value is simplicity, making it harder to use really takes away any reason to use the service.
